Snow Flower and The Secret Fan

by Hali Felice on July 24, 2008

If you are anything like me, then you find your next book via the best sellers list. Well, I stumbled upon Snow Flower and The Secret Fan this way and I am glad I did. Best seller it deserves, for its detail and precision in showing us readers a world away from here. We are completely submerged into 19th century Chinese culture. As we follow the “coming of age” of a little girl named Lily, we are thrown into a world not much unlike our own, but yet completely different. We follow her through pain and suffering, joy and happiness, and so many more emotions we all experience at such a young and delicate age. This book also shows us the meaning of true friendship and how fate brings such together as one. We follow Lily and her laotong, “old same,” and witness their emotional roller coaster of pleasure and deceit. This is a touching and insightful novel that is sure to open your eyes and have you questioning your own faithful friendships and conception of Chinese women and their culture of the 19th century.
