Q. – I got a new position at my job and part of my new responsibilities are to attend more executive meetings in which a suit is required. I need to get some new suits for my wardrobe but I want one that is more fashionable and can still show my stylish side. Do you have any tips for how to add more style to what can sometimes be a boring business suit?
A. – Really good question and one that I think a lot of us struggle with. I know I do! There are a lot of suit options out there and you want to find one that makes you feel the most comfortable and then add some of your own stylish touches because no one wants to look like their are wearing their mom’s suit!
One way you can add some style to a suit is with a great shirt to wear under the jacket. Bows and ruffles are big for the season so try to incorporate some of those feminine details. Like this Silk Tie-Neck Blouse from Banana Republic ($49.99). Since it is silk it will give a good contrast to the suit and try a bold color like the teal or the purple to really pop from under your jacket. And the bow tie around the neck will peek through from the jacket to add detail.
Sometimes it is not always necessary to wear a full suit. You might be able to get away with pairing a skirt or a pair of work pants that you already have with a stylish cropped jacket or a blazer. The Wool Faille Trapunto Collar Jacket from Ann Taylor ($89.99) is not your traditional blazer. It has a scooped collar with a high button at the collar. It has three-quarter length sleeves with button closure at the bottom, detailed stitching and a thin black patent belt to pull the jacket together.
Probably the best way to really add some style to a plain suit is with a great necklace and a great pair of shoes. These accessories can be your way to add color and show your creative side. Try a necklace that has some layers like the Robyn Rhodes Rumi Necklace ($125.00) which is a triple stand necklace with a really pretty pendant that will add color and flare.
Don’t be afraid to add color with your shoe selection also. If you are wearing just a solid color black or grey suit try a pair of power heels that add a pop of color like the Reese from Betsey Johnson ($165.00). They are rounded tow with a side bow and scalloped red trim. With a pink leather sole and 3 1/2 inch heel, no one will doubt your sense of fashion.
So don’t think of having to wear a suit as a death sentence to your fashion sense. There are a lot of ways you can add your own personal touches of style to a traditional business suit. Because after all, everyone still wants to look fashionable in the office!
